Your best bet is to pay off non credit card debt (your medical/dental bills) as you have the greatest chance of having these items completely removed from your credit file.

Charged off credit card debt is another matter. Don’t make the mistake of simply cutting a check to whatever collection agency has the debt for the charge-off and assume that your credit rating will be magically restored...Doing so will not remove it from your credit reports. It will simply be updated to a "Paid Charge-Off," which, while slightly better, is still a seriously derogatory item. Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a charge-off, whether paid or not, can remain on a consumer's credit reports for up to seven years.

If you're going to pay off old-charged-off debt anyway, then you might as well negotiate the lowest settlement you can possibly get, being that the negative charge-off notation is going to stay for 7 years on your credit report anyway. You have to be VERY careful in this effort...Mail them a vaguely worded statement like:

I am willing to settle this matter for 25% of the original amount. This is in no way an admission of this debt, but rather an attempt to settle this matter. Your firm must send me a written agreement on your company's letterhead that you will accept this amount as "payment in full" and that is issue will be settled. Upon receipt of this agreement, I will mail you a money order for this amount.
==================
* Get all terms of any settlement deal you reach with debt collectors IN WRITING BEFORE you give them your money. Never accept settlement deals over the phone...The debt collectors will deny that any settlement was ever made once they get your “settlement” money and will come back demanding more money.
* NEVER, EVER give out your checking account numbers to debt collectors for making electronic debit payments.

I have a few negative credit marks on my report.
I was wondering if I should pay off debts that are only like 2 years old because I am wanting to finance a car and eventually a home...
I had a previous car repossesed but am making good payments on the rest of it, can I get them to delete it when its paid?

I am basically just wanting to repair my credit and with all my negative marks I dont know where to start...

Do I pay off the department store card I had? (3 to 4 years ago, $400)
The 2 credit cars? (2 years, $600)
Dentist and doctor?(2 years, $500)

Any help is greatlyappreciated!
I just checked my credit score and it said 555, poor, which is higher than I expected.

I think I will go the route of avoiding the 2 credit cards and paying off the local debts like medical if they agree to remove it from my report.

Great answers everyone! Thank you so much!

You should be able to get approved. You amount is pretty reasonable. It will affect your mortgage rate though. If you amounts in collections, they will require that you pay those before being accepted for a loan. Getting mortgage is easier than people think, but you have to meet some bare minimum requirements. Like no collections. Doctor's bills will affect you if they are in collections. You will have to pay them first. Meet with a broker, get them to pull your credit, they will tell the steps to getting approved for your new home. Good luck and I hope you find the home you are looking for!

Simply put- if she agrees to cosign, they should approve you. My sister's credit was terrible, but my mother cosigned for her auto loan. My sister was approved. The downfall to this situation is that if you fail to pay the monthly bill, it looks bad on her credit as well. Thought you'd like a nice, to-the-point answer.

Hope it all works out for you!

I've never been late on my house payment or my auto payment. I have one credit card from 5 years ago, that has been charged off, and a doctor bill for $35.00. I've been on my job for 22 years. but my credit scores are 540-610 and no one wont's to help me. My a/c in my home is out (live in Texas). is their a company that can help me get refinanced? with out having to spend money to get some kind of credit repair? I hear that's a big scam also. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

You have a free cleaner
and a free cook
How much are the braces
Perhaps you would be better off
Just you and your son
Hire a cleaner and a cook or do it yourself
She does not like your son
Her children do not like you
Get a new cook/cleaner who causes you less heartache

Get the bills paid down and make payments on time and things will get better; but it'll be 7 years before the "bad" credit pops off the credit report

I have very bad credit. At least 3000 dollars worth of credit card and doctors bills. I am wanting to pay this off, and try to rebuild my credit. After everything is paid off, how long before the creditors(actually collection agencies in my case) take the points of of your credit, and do they even do this? Will it really help if I pay it off, or am I doomed? I want to buy a new house, new car, and get a credit card, but I cant ( even though I make good money) before I get married- which should be soon. I see creit repair agencies and debt consolidators, but have heard they make matters worse. I would like to pay off my debts, but if it doesnt help my credit score-I feel like I could spend the money on other things.( I am a single mother, while I make good money-I dont have it to throw around). Does anyone know what I should do?
I would like to add, that I do not have a large amount of credit card debt-it is very small. Most of my debt is medical.I also am not in any way saying that I make a great deal of money- but it is a very good amount for my age and experience. I can afford to make PAYMENTS on these items posted to my credit, but as of this moment ( holidays and all) I cannot pay them off- all at once. Would my credit report list who I should pay in specific ? I doubt very seriously that I have marks against my credit that are false, but if so it is worth a try to send them the correct info. Thanks for all of your help !Keep the great answers coming! I am taking notes!

First the charge-offs are huge and will impact your credit for 7 1/2 years. There is nothing that can be done about those. Also most likely you will have collection agencies coming after you for the car and credit cards.

The doctor bills and are probably not listed as charge-offs they are most likely listed as collection accounts. Simply paying off collections will not make them go away, they are also negatively impacting your credit and will do so for 7 1/2 years.

The cable bill is most likely being reported by both the original creditor as charge-off and the collection company. Again simply paying the collections will not remove the negative account from your credit history.

The only way to remove the collection accounts is to negotiate a "Pay for Deletion" agreement with the collection agencies. This means that they agree in writing that they will remove the account from your credit report in exchange for payment. They will not want to do this, however they can. You have what they want..money.

If they agree, get the agreement in writing BEFORE you mail them the payment, pay by money order, never allow them access to your bank accounts.

Try to contact the company that financed the other car that was paid off without incident, and see if they will report the account to the credit bureaus.

The sooner that you can possibly re-establish some good credit, the better off you will be.
